Why anyone does what he/she does at any given moment is always more complicated than it appears. Many of the things we do are done without reflection or analysis. Indeed, many are done by rote. Yet, we are not automatons. Almost anything one does - however routine and inconsequential at first glance - is actually rooted in an accumulated conglomeration of biology and circumstance beyond categorical explanation; beyond complete and certain recognition; beyond all-inclusive itemization; possibly, even, beyond thorough and intrinsic understanding.
Accordingly, I am not at all certain I can elaborate (with confidence) what this exercise is about. Or why I am pursuing it. In some measure, it is a whim. Yet, clearly, it is more than that - since websites cost money to generate and advertence to maintain. The best I can do, I think, is to mention the various notions at work ... and leave it to any chance visitor to make such sense of it as he or she can.
One such notion has been canvassed already - under the rubric Etymology.
Another is inherent in my using words such as "rubric" - and the possessive case for the subject of this sentence: ie. I am a student of the language, and savour the discipline of attempting to craft it well.
Similarly, I appreciate the craft of thinking logically (trying to do so, at least) and applying that aptitude to a quest which seems to have driven humankind since the beginning of recorded history (and before that, presumably, as well): namely, making sense of our own existence ... and everything this comprises.
So, how do I propose to tackle the exercise? To some extent, that should be apparent already, but further reference might be had to the section entitled modus operandi.
